LAFAYETTE — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Tippecanoe County $25 million to complete phase two of the Wabash River Greenway Project.

Phase two will develop the North Ninth Street/North River Road passage of the greenway, including the addition of a new bridge over the Wabash River for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Greenway Project will provide accessibility upgrades including new park-and-ride spaces and bus stop connections, adding additional sections of the boardwalk to the trail and a new trail bridge, which will connect Tecumseh Trails County Park to the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater Park.

Tippecanoe County, Lafayette, West Lafayette and the Tippecanoe County Metropolitan Planning Organization partnered with The Wabash River Enhancement Corp. on the grant, which should grant project completion by 2032.

Project leaders have announced an additional $1.4 million will be secured locally.

The Wabash River Greenway follows a span of the Wabash River passage through five counties: Fountain, Warren, Tippecanoe, Carroll and Cass.

The first phase of The Greenway Project was funded by Indiana’s READI grant program and two Next Level Trails grants. The Greenway Project’s first phase projects are funded and underway.
