WARSAW — A Fort Wayne man was arrested for allegedly threatening a woman and recklessly driving after a custody dispute.
Chad Aaron Rickard, 34, Fort Wayne, is charged with intimidation with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; confinement, neglect of a dependent, and possession of methamphetamine, all level 6 felonies; aggressive driving, a class A misdemeanor; and reckless driving, a class C misdemeanor.
On May 19, a woman called 911 to report Rickard was attempting to run the vehicle she was in off the roadway. Throughout the conversation, the woman told dispatch Rickard was braking hard in front of them while they were traveling and said to immediately send an officer, as Rickard was known to have weapons.
According to court documents, Rickard was also sending the woman threatening messages. Dispatch told the woman to drive to the Warsaw Police Department. A man and two children were in the woman’s vehicle at the time of the incident.
While the woman was traveling to WPD, Warsaw officers found the woman’s and Rickard’s vehicles traveling on Frontage Road and detained Rickard. A man in the woman’s vehicle was visibly shaken up by what happened and said Rickard was driving in front of them and locking his brakes. He also said Rickard acted like he was going to T-bone their vehicle multiple times.
The woman told officers that based upon her past history of domestic violence with Rickard, she was scared to stop the vehicle. She also said Rickard was 30 minutes late to pick up the two children for parenting time.
Rickard told officers he drove to Columbia City to pick up the two children but that the woman wasn’t there. While searching Rickard’s vehicle, officers found an oval tray containing meth.
Surveillance footage from two local businesses showed the vehicle the woman was in being followed by Rickard’s.
The day of the incident, Rickard called a woman to say he was in jail because he was late to the custody exchange. He also argued police officers planted the meth found in his vehicle.
Rickard has already been arrested and released on bond.
