WINONA LAKE — A Winona Lake man was recently arrested after allegedly hitting a child.
Tomas Alonzo, 60, 1202 Wooster Road Lot 40, Winona Lake, is charged with battery to a person less than 14 years of age by a person at least 18 years of age, a level 6 felony.
On April 28, 2022, a Winona Lake Police officer responded to a battery report. A woman said she was making food for a child when Alonzo said the child was being disrespectful and hit the child’s right upper leg.
According to court documents, a witness heard Alonzo yell, followed by a smacking sound and the child crying. The child told the officer Alonzo smacked their leg.
In an interview with the officer, Alonzo denied any physical altercation.
On April 29, 2022, the child’s mother provided a recording of a conversation between herself and Alonzo. In the conversation, a man and woman are heard speaking with each other. When the woman said the man smacked the child, the man, presumably Alonzo, admitted to smacking the child but said he only hit them “a little bit.”
Alonzo was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on May 12 with a $5,250 surety and cash bond.
