Phillip Smith, also known as Mudd Bogg and Phil, passed away peacefully on Saturday May 6, 2023, in his childhood home where he had spent most of his life. He was surrounded by his loving family during his last moments. Phillip was born on March 24, 1963, in Goshen, to Phillip Smith Sr. and Laura (Brandon) Smith.

Phil graduated from Warsaw High School with the class of 1981 and later obtained his commercial driver’s license. He served more than two decades at R.R. Donnelley & Sons in materials handling and accomplished a lifelong goal spending some time as an over-the-road truck driver

Phil was a private person overall, but he showed great love for his family and loved being around them. He particularly loved spoiling his nephews Josh, Dustin, Brooks and Jared along with their seven great-nieces and great-nephews immensely. They were a huge part of family to him.

Phil’s love for Christmastime gift giving was legendary among those who knew him best. He had a big heart and always had a Mountain Dew in his back pocket. His passions revolved around mud bogs, tractor and truck pulls, demolition derbies and muscle cars. He attended the 4 Wheel Drive Jamboree in Indianapolis several times. Phil enjoyed listening to classic rock and old country music during his leisure time. He was also a skilled artist.

Phillip is survived by mother, Laura Smith, of Warsaw; siblings, Bambi Hyde, of Warsaw, and Chauncey (Aleta) Smith, of Pierceton; nephews, Josh Hyde, of Warsaw, Dustin (Carla) Baker, of Pierceton, Brooks (Tyler) Smith, of Warsaw, and Jared (Taylor) Smith, of Pierceton; uncle, Steve Smith, of Claypool; aunts, Sallie Brandon, of Columbus, Miss., Brenda Brandon, of Etna Green, Carol Brandon, of Warsaw, and Erma Brandon, of Warsaw. In addition, he is survived by seven great-nieces and great-nephews who he truly adored.

Titus Funeral Home of Warsaw, 2000 Sheridan St., is entrusted with care of the Smith family. Visitors may gather with the family from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12. A Life Celebration Funeral will begin at 11:30 a.m., officiated by family member Dudley Wates. Final interment will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.

Phillip will be dearly missed by all who knew him best. He will be remembered for his big heart, his passion for life and the joy he brought to those around him. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to K21 Health Foundation’s Cancer Care Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
