SYRACUSE — Wawasee Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Troyer announced at the school board meeting Tuesday, April 18, that the new head boys’ basketball coach for Wawasee High School is Lou Lefevre.
Prior to accepting the position at Wawasee, Lefevre led the boys’ basketball programs at North Harrison High School from 2019-23 (64-26), Tipton High School from 2014-19 (91-28) and Providence High School from 2004-14 (175-52), according to a news release provided by Athletic Director Brent Doty.
His experience coaching high school basketball extends beyond Indiana, as Lefevre spent time in both Georgia and Connecticut, amassing four state championships prior to moving to Indiana. Throughout his 35-year head coaching career, with the last 19 years in Indiana, he has amassed a career mark of 615-4240, which includes a 329-106 mark within Indiana. Lefevre also has six Indiana High School Athletic Association sectional championships and two IHSAA regional championships.
“We are excited to have Coach Lefevre leading our boys’ basketball program and look forward to his future work with our students athletes,” said Doty in the news release. “We had a number of veteran head coaches reach out and apply for this position, along with a group of experienced, young coaches who will undoubtedly make an impact in years to come. However, after meeting with Coach Lefevre, we felt his knowledge, experience, philosophy, leadership and passion for high school basketball were the best fit for the program. We are excited for our student athletes and the opportunity for them to develop under Coach Lefevre’s leadership.”
Lefevre was unable to be at Tuesday’s Wawasee School Board meeting. However, in the news release, Lefevre is quoted as saying, “A coach looking for a new position usually looks at two things: the quality of the people in charge of the school operation and the present condition of the basketball program. Both seem very strong at Wawasee.”
He also said that “the administrators in charge of Wawasee High School and the entire Wawasee School Corporation seem to be the exact type of skilled, welcoming and supportive educators that any coach could hope to work for. That, coupled with the fact that former coach Jon Everingham has built a strong foundation in the basketball program for me to try to build on, made Wawasee the easy choice for me over other possible opportunities.”
