Mentone Council To Make Decision On Chickens In Town Next Month

MENTONE — The Mentone Town Council is to make a decision by next month about allowing chickens in town.
The council told resident Hannah Beliles that at its meeting on Wednesday, March 1. She’s been coming to meetings for quite some time asking for the measure.
Beliles told the council a petition she’d created at change.org had gotten 87 signatures, and she could confirm that 21 of those were from town residents.
Washington Street Project
The council also approved advertising for contractors to reline a pipe on Washington Street.
The pipe’s become damaged in part due to a tree in the area’s roots. Town Engineer James Emans estimated the cost would be around $200,000 for the project.
In other business, the council:
- Heard from Croy the Mentone Chamber of Commerce’s Easter egg hunt starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at Mentzer Park.
- Heard from Croy that Harrison Center Church, the First Baptist Church of Mentone and Mentone United Methodist Church are partnering again for Mission to Mentone. He said that he thought Cornerstone Church of Mentone might also participate in the effort, which involves doing service projects for people in need in town on Thursday, March 23, through Saturday, March 25. People may donate financially to help with the projects by giving funds to Harrison Center Church. Checks should include in the memo that they are for Mission to Mentone, but be made out to the church. People are welcome to come out at 8 a.m. on the three dates to 112 W. Maple St. to help with a roof repair.
- Heard that cleanup day for Mentone’s cemetery would be Monday, April 3. People should remove any flowers or other items they wish to keep by then.
The council’s next regular meeting is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Mentone Town Hall.
