Eugenia N. Fulkerson — UPDATED
Eugenia N. “Genie” Fulkerson, 78, Warsaw, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at Independence Village, Zionsville.
Genie was born Jan. 27, 1945, in Wabash, the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Marian (Hamp) Nixon.
After graduating from Knox High School, New York, with the Class of ’63, she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University. She enjoyed her time at IU as a member of The Singing Hoosiers. Devoted to her family and friends, Genie has also spent a lifetime of assistance to others.
She was a volunteer for the Red Cross, serving with the “Donut Dollies,” visiting combat troops at remote fire bases in Vietnam, visiting hospitals and evac units and spending time comforting wounded soldiers. She has also been a mother and grandmother figure to several children through the foster parent program. Genie retired as the local owner of Champs Sporting Goods in Warsaw.
She is survived by her son, Daniel (Amy) Fulkerson, Mishawaka; daughter, Josephine “Jodi” Ramirez, Zionsville; grandchildren, Alex Fulkerson, Zionsville, Emma (Adam) Fulkerson, Valparaiso, Daniel (Abby Heck) Fulkerson, St. Louis, Mo., Noah, Luke and Leah Fulkerson, all of Mishawaka; brother, Don Nixon, Florida; and her companion, Mary Geyer, Warsaw.
In addition to her parents, Genie was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan Nixon and a brother, Joseph Nixon Jr.
A memorial celebration of Genie’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at McHatton Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
