South Bend Man Arrested On Drug Charges After Elkhart County Traffic Stop
Press Release
ELKHART — A South Bend man was arrested for several felony charges after being stopped by an Indiana State Trooper for a moving violation on the Indiana Toll Road.
At 3:19 a.m. on Jan. 9, Trooper Luis Alvarez stopped an eastbound silver 2000 Chevrolet for a moving violation on the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 91. This is about one mile west of the Elkhart exit.
While speaking to the driver and the two passengers of the Chevrolet, Alvarez noticed a handgun with an extended magazine on the floorboard. The identification the driver originally gave to Alvarez was found to be false, but the driver was soon identified as George Gandy, 36, South Bend.
Additional information gathered during the traffic stop ultimately led to a search of the Chevrolet. This search resulted in troopers discovering several plastic bags containing about 36.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Troopers also discovered several pills preliminarily identified as controlled substances, suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia and two additional handguns.
Gandy was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia. He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
The two passengers in the Chevrolet were released from the scene.
