NAPPANEE — Four people were injured after a vehicle accident involving a horse-drawn wagon near Nappanee.
At 7:37 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, deputies with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle accident on North SR 19, south of West CR 1100N, Nappanee.
A silver 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by Bray M. McClain, 24, Delphi, was traveling south on SR 19 when McClain rear-ended a horse-drawn hay wagon driven by Wyman E. Hochstetler, 40, Nappanee.
According to an accident report from KCSO, McClain briefly said he couldn’t recall how the accident occurred. Deputies observed skid marks from McClain’s vehicle, indicating the Avenger’s brakes were applied prior to the accident. Hochstetler’s hay wagon did have a fully operational red light attached to its rear.
McClain complained of head pain and was taken to South Bend Regional Hospital for further medical evaluation. Hochstetler complained of abdominal and pelvic pain, and was flown from the scene to South Bend Regional Hospital.
Two children were sitting on the hay wagon when the accident occurred. Melissa Yoder, 7, Nappanee, sustained an injury to her lower left leg. Joshua Miller, 8, Nappanee, complained of abdominal and pelvic pain. Yoder and Miller were both taken to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.
Damages are estimated up to $50,000.
