Man Arrested After Threatening, Battering Woman
Staff Report
NORTH WEBSTER — A South Bend man was recently arrested after allegedly threatening and battering a woman.
Kiante Montel Shorter, 29, South Bend, is charged with intimidation with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; and domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury and strangulation, both level 6 felonies.
On Nov. 28, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a domestic incident in North Webster. The deputy spoke with a woman who said she had a verbal argument with Shorter.
According to court documents, as the argument escalated, Shorter allegedly showed the woman a handgun and threatened to harm her. He also punched the woman in the face, pulled her hair extensions out and choked her.
The deputy noticed the woman had a busted lip and red marks on her face and neck. Without being asked about the firearm, Shorter told the deputy he did not have a gun. He also said the woman punched herself in the face and choked herself. The deputy did not find a firearm on Shorter’s person upon his arrest.
Shorter said he had a firearm in his possession on Nov. 27, but not during the battery.
Shorter was previously convicted of domestic battery in St. Joseph County in November 2021.
For this case, Shorter was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on Nov. 28, with a $16,000 surety and cash bond.
