Staff Report
WARSAW — Indiana Sen. Todd Young was one of 12 Republicans to vote in support of legislation that would codify and protect same-sex marriage.
Known as the Respect for Marriage Act, the legislation now heads to a vote in the House, where it is expected to pass easily, and then head to President Joe Biden’s desk, where his signature is widely expected.
The final vote was 61-36. All Senate Democrats voted in support.
Other Republicans who supported the measure include Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rob Portman, Thom Tillis, Mitt Romney, Roy Blunt, Cynthia Lummis, Richard Burr, Shelley Moore Capito, Dan Sullivan and Joni Ernst.
Indiana Sen. Mike Braun voted against it.
Afterward, the White House issued a statement saying the vote reaffirmed “a fundamental truth: Love is love, and Americans should have the right to marry the person they love.”
