Supporting McConnell
Dear Editor,
Seldom have the politics in our community been bipartisan. I’ve lived in Warsaw practically my entire life. I went to elementary school here, graduated from Warsaw Community High School and now raise children in this community. As far as I can remember, politics have been a one-sided show. Republicans run, and Republicans win. Regardless of platform, regardless of beliefs or political motivations, voters see a party “R” and that’s all they need to know.
Imagine measuring a candidate’s capacity as a leader simply by what their political leanings are. Even more, imagine ignoring how popular some of those beliefs are on both sides of the aisle. Legalizing marijuana (or at least decriminalizing it) is incredibly popular on both sides of the aisle. So is being tough on child sex crimes. Unfortunately, our fellow constituents haven’t seemed to care too much about electing leaders who champion these ideas. The letter beside their name seems to be the only thing that motivates people.
I would invite others to start looking at the issues and where candidates actually stand on them. Care about being tough on child predators? Maybe stop electing prosecutors that give them passes to attack our children and get away with it. God forbid they have an “D” next to their name.
It’s time our neighbors start loving their children more than they love their party.
Travis McConnell is pro-gun, wants to be tough on child predators and thinks Indiana’s
marijuana laws are stupid. I can’t think of many Hoosiers that disagree with any of these ideals. In fact, both online and in-person, many have been very outspoken in championing them. Let’s remind them that at the end of the day, a person’s actions are what matters. Not their name, or their looks or the amount of money they can raise. Integrity is everything. And it’s been lacking in our community. On both sides of the aisle. Electing good leaders is what democracy is all about.
