Alice V. Balmer — UPDATED
Alice V. Perry Balmer, 95, Warsaw, formerly of rural Akron, died at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, at Paddock Springs of Warsaw.
Alice was born Aug. 21, 1927, in St. Joseph County, to the late Ford and Lucille (Searer) Perry. She married on May 19, 1951, in Fort Rucker, Alabama, to William E. Balmer; he preceded her in death Nov. 10, 2014.
She was a 1945 graduate of Bremen High School. She then furthered her education at Goshen College, attaining her Bachelor of Science in education. Alice taught school for 32 years. She taught for Bremen for five years, Madison Township for three years, Silver Lake for three years and North Miami for 18 years. She has been a longtime member of the Beaver Dam United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She also served as the UMW President of the Local and Huntington District. She then moved to London, Kentucky, where she attended the First United Methodist Church. While in Kentucky, she volunteered for the Bennett Center, assisting in Methodist Missions. She then moved back to Bourbon and attended Bourbon First United Methodist Church and served in children’s ministry. Alice was active until the day of her passing. She enjoyed visiting and doing devotions with fellow residents.
She is survived by her son Wayne E. (Merlinda) Balmer, Roann; daughters Jeannie A. (Jim) Smith, Rochester and Janet L. (John) Lipps, London, Ky.; grandchildren David, Debra, Shaun, Brian, Jeremy, Jason, Michael and Josh; 14 great-grandchildren; and siblings Angeline (Richard) Miller, Kansas, Carl Perry and Mary Jeanne, Michigan, Alta Grossman, Bourbon, Alton (Pat) Perry, Akron, Alverta (Howard) Alderfer, Warsaw, Alvin Perry, Pierceton, Alethea (Devon) Rensberger, Rochester and John (Tammy) Perry, Warsaw.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband; son and daughter-in-law Stanley R. (Jean) Balmer; brother Glade Perry; and sisters Arlene Coleman and Avanelle Cook.
The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2022, at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with Pastor Butch Troke officiating.
The interment will take place in the Mentone Cemetery, Mentone, following the service.
Visitation hours will be held from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, at King Memorial Home, Mentone.
