WARSAW – Kosciusko Water and Woodland Invasive Partnership (KWWIP) is taking on invasive species in county lakes.

As a part of KWWIP’s efforts to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species, they are partnering with the Great Lakes Commission to educate boaters and other recreators about the risks of spreading aquatic invasive species (AIS) at public and private boating access sites.

The first event will be held on July 9 at 1309 Chapman Lake Drive, Warsaw, from 7 am-11 am.

The Great Lakes AIS “Landing Blitz” events emphasize the need to Clean, Drain, and Dry boats whenever they come out of the water.  Visitors will be able to see examples of some common invasive species, learn the best and most efficient way to rid their watercraft of any aquatic hitchhikers, and learn how they can get more involved with protecting their favorite fishing hole for their children to enjoy for years to come.

The discussion will include updates on several plants such as Starry Stonewort, Curly Leaf Pond Weed, Purple Loosestrife, and Eurasian Watermilfoil. 

KWWIP president and Chapman Lake resident, Peggy Wihebrink had this to say about the importance of controlling invasive species in Chapman Lake. “As a person who enjoys and loves lake Chapman, I have seen an increase in invasives over the decades we have lived here.  This is a real problem. I’m so glad to learn there are things we can do to preserve our lake for generations to come.”
