The Whalemobile Comes To North Webster Library
News Release
NORTH WEBSTER — The Whalemobile comes to North Webster Community Public Library, with presentation at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and noon Thursday, June 23.
Cynde McInnis will bring her 43-foot, inflatable whale, Nile, as part of the summer reading program, Oceans of Possibilities.
Children will meet Nile, a 35-year old humpback whale whom McInnis has seen off the coast of Massachusetts almost every summer since. They can go inside the inflatable whale and learn about how whales are similar to and different from humans. Students will learn about Nile’s migratory path, how many calves she’s had and how researchers learned this information. Artifacts such as baleen, teeth and bones are available for children to see and feel. At the end of the presentation, they will learn how to become Playground Protectors and see how much trash they can collectively pick up this summer.
This is McInnis’ 29th season working on whale watch boats. She is a naturalist with 7 Seas Whale Watch, Gloucester, Mass. Having studied whales in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, she brings her passion for whales and her knowledge of these animals into schools and libraries to help cultivate the next generations of ocean advocates.
The Whalemobile aims to captivate students and help them connect with the oceans, both emotionally and intellectually. Students will come away with knowledge of and a fascination for whales that will be the spark that inspires them to care about the oceans and the environment around us.
