MENTONE — Mentone is continuing to weigh whether to have chickens within town limits.
At its meeting on Wednesday, June 8, the Mentone Town Council once again heard from resident Hannah Beliles.
She first came before the council in April to ask that chickens be allowed in town. On Wednesday, she gave the council handouts, which included rules from the City of South Bend regarding chickens within its limits.
The town council didn’t make a decision on the issue at the meeting, wanting to do more research.
Loitering At The Park
The council also discussed problems with people loitering at the town’s park late at night.
Town Attorney Andrew Grossnickle mentioned Town Marshal Jim Eads brought that issue up with him. Grossnickle looked over town ordinances and said the town didn’t currently have set rules in them regarding a curfew at the park for adults.
The council agreed to allow Grossnickle to work on an ordinance.
In other business, the council:
- Heard from Croy that the town’s spring clean-up day “went well.” Eads noted a few TVs were still left out and people should take them to the Kosciusko County Recycling Depot.
- Heard from Eads that the town’s speed signs are on their way.
- Approved a $55,012 bid from Peerless Midwest for purchasing new equipment for the town’s well. That was the lowest of the three bids that Town Utilities Superintendent Josh Shepherd had obtained for it.
The council’s next meeting is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Mentone Town Hall.
