Warsaw Community Schools’ Chess Teams Place In Top 10 At State Finals

WARSAW — Several Warsaw Community Schools teams placed in the Top 10 of their divisions at the 2022 SCI Team Chess Indiana State Finals on Saturday, March 19.
Hosted at Morton High School in Hammond, teams played in groups of four students and competed in four rounds of chess.
In the Third Grade and Under Division, Washington STEM Academy A-team placed sixth out of 20. A-team members are Fareed Sultan Mohammed, Ezra Burden, Aarav Jena, and Aadhya Rajesh. Washington STEM B-team placed eighth out of 20. B-team members are Josiah Burden, Elizabeth Macke, Jake Finley, and Seth James.
Edgewood Middle School, 7th to 8th grade, sent two teams to the competition. The A-team placed second out of 13. A-team members are Ashlan Oliver, Carson Devanathan, Makayla Riley, and Jaya Dharmapuri. The B-team placed ninth out of 13. B-team members are Josh Carpenter, Grace Landon, and Owen Meerzo.
The Warsaw Community High School team placed eighth out of 19. Team members are Nate Anderson, Aiden Carr, McKale Hagg, and Keegan Besson.
Warsaw Community Schools staff would like to recognize and thank Warsaw Education Foundation for their financial support through a Red Apple Grant. WCS staff would also like to thank the coaches. Coaches are Jay Bolduc, Washington STEM; Sam Wysong, with parent-volunteer coach Mel Oliver, Edgewood; and Olivia Patton, WCHS.
