MILFORD — Spring was in the air at the Milford Town Council’s monthly meeting Monday, March 14. Agenda items included upcoming paving projects, sidewalk repair, spring clean-up, the hiring of lifeguards for Waubee Lake Beach and Waubee Lake Homeowners Association Poker Run.
The council also approved the use of town facilities for Food Truck Fridays, a new summer event organized by Meet Milford, a group comprised of Clerk-Treasurer Tricia Gall, Karena Wilkinson of Harvest Coffee and others seeking a “good way to get local people together.”
“The idea is to bring people downtown,” said Gall who later added the events could “provide a place where people can get together and see what downtown has to offer.”
The first Food Truck Friday will take place from 5-8 p.m. June 17 in the Milford Community Building parking lot. Also taking part in the festivities will be Rapidos Burritos, First Brethren Church and live music will be provided by musicians from the Milford Methodist Meeting House. Information is available on the Meet Milford Facebook page.
Gall also said Milford Lions has a plan to provide stage entertainment for Milford Fest. She added the Lions have still not heard from Beer and Jessop Amusements, which provides rides for the event.
Milford Fire Chief Virgil Sharp reported a problem with the plumbing at the fire station after water was discovered coming through the floor around a toilet. “The problem is going to be fairly costly,” said Sharp, adding it also needed to be addressed quickly.
“It may be time to take care of the building period,” said Long, after Marquart commented the line running into the facility dates to 1957. Sharp is seeking quotes for the work, including a replumb of the line from the main into the building.
Sharp said the new pumper truck should arrive in Milford around March 18.
During Superintendent Steven Marquart’s report on streets, water and parks, the council approved the resealing of parking lots and driveways on town property at a total cost of $14,645. Properties include water tower, sewer plant, town hall and EMS areas, utilities building and New Beginnings. The work will be performed by Super Seal Inc.
The addition of a handicap parking spot on the northeast corner of the town parking lot on Main Street was also approved.
Marquart said Community Crossing paving work will be done in two phases with the first phase starting April 18. The second phase start is yet to be determined.
The council approved the 2022 spring clean, which will run from April 21 to 23 with dumpsters located at 600 N. Main St.
Flushing of hydrants will take place April 6-7.
Marquart reported four Milford residents may take part in the 50/50 sidewalk program. The council approved a quote from Thompson Concrete for $11,990. Residents will pay half of the cost of the work on their respective properties.
In the interest of “good due dilligence,” a committee is being formed to study the future purchase of new water meters for the town. The committee will be composed of representatives of all departments and will look at all aspects of the meters to find “the one that works best for the most people,” said Gall. The appointment of President Doug Ruch to the board was approved by the council.
The failure of data log information on meters resulted to credit refunds to two wastewater customers in the amount of $92.96 and $60.40 respectively.
Waubee Lake resident Tracey Burke requested the council allow live music be performed at the Lions Pavilion at Waubee Lake Park during the Waubee Lake Association’s Kayak Poker Run. The event, which is a fundraiser for the July 4 fireworks display, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 18, with live music being performed for roughly two hours, said Burke.
The council approved the request and asked Town Marshal Derek Kreider to have an officer on hand to serve as an intermediary in the event there are complaints. “One person’s too loud isn’t someone else’s too loud,” quipped Councilman Ken Long.
Milford Town Council also approved the following items:
• $1,100 for geographic information system mapping for water and sewer department.
• $7,875 to renew contract with Boyce Systems, which administers Keystone software used by the town.
• $1,439 to purchase a fire proof file cabinet.
• $6,027 for new squad car computers.
• $4,320 for the annual cloud storage fee.
• LWG CPAs & Advisors were approved by the council to assist with matters related to housing predevelopment funding and the annexation fiscal plan.
The clerk/treasurer’s office in Town Hall will be closed April 15.
