State Senate Kills Divisive Education Bill
Staff Report
INDIANAPOLIS — A controversial bill strongly opposed by teachers has died in the Indiana State Senate.
The Senate killed HB 1134 which sought to restrict how teachers teach about race and racism and gained attention as the debate over critical race theory became an issue of debate in many communities.
Sen. Linda Rogers, a Republican from Granger, chose not to call forward a watered-down version of the bill.
Some Republican lawmakers thought the bill created too much of a burden for educators, while others thought it didn’t go far enough, he said.
Lawmakers could still try to incorporate parts of the bill into other legislation.
The House version originally created curriculum review committees that could veto learning material at every school district, while banning the teaching of eight concepts that lawmakers described as divisive.
