WARSAW — Bomy’s Authentic Indian Food in Warsaw on Monday celebrated the establishment of a 24/7 food pantry.
The Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce had a ribbon-cutting for Bomy’s new food pantry on Monday, Feb. 28. The pantry, which sits outside the restaurant at 1403 E. Winona Ave., offers food and more to anyone who wishes to stop by and take it.
Bomy’s owner, Bomy Singh, said another group had put up a free pantry outside the restaurant, but weather damaged it. He decided that he would replace the pantry with a larger and more sturdier one.
“I’ve seen people using it at 9 at night when we were closing, so I said, ‘Why don’t we start one?'” he said.
Singh said he puts items in it, but anyone is welcome to bring food, toiletries or even clothing items to put in it to distribute. He plans to put an extra shelf outside to put items on and may add another container next to it to store more items.
“A lot of people are out of jobs; they’re broke. If they need any food, every kind of food will be in there, so people can use it 24/7,” he said.
Singh said he will use a camera to surveil it just to make sure no one vandalizes it. He might help put out more pantries in the community in the future.
He said providing food through the pantry is important to him to “share … blessings with others.”
