WARSAW — As of shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, Kosciusko County was moved to being under a travel watch on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s travel status map.
A travel watch means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
Elkhart, Fulton, Marshall and Noble counties are also under travel watches.
Wabash and Whitley counties are under travel advisories. That means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas.
According to the Fulton County 911 Communications Facebook page, Meridian Road between SR 14 and CR 50N will be closed until further notice. Motorists are asked to avoid the area so crews can work safely.
A majority of northern and north-central Indiana are under a travel advisory or watch.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for all of northern Indiana until 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3. Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 12 to 16 inches, with locally higher amounts up to 18 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze.
Travel will become very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility today and Thursday. The hazardous conditions will continue to impact travel throughout the day on Thursday.
Unplowed roads are likely to become impassable in many areas. Plummeting wind chills accompanied by blowing and drifting snow could bring a potentially lethal travel situation with wind chills falling below zero if you become stuck in your vehicle Thursday night. Make any needed travel changes to avoid travel during this time. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
InkFreeNews will post updates on any travel status changes for Kosciusko County as they happen.
