County Velo Cycling Club Donates Bike Lights To Warsaw Police
Press Release
WARSAW — Warsaw Police Department recently received a donation of bike lights from the Kosciusko County Velo Cycling Club.
On Thursday, Jan. 20, WPD was met by KCV Cycling Club’s Board of Directors at the police station. KCV Cycling Club presented bicycle lights for Warsaw officers to distribute during patrol when the need is recognized. The set includes a red light for the rear and white for the front. Each can be in flash or steady mode.
While it is state law to have lights illuminated one half hour after sunset until one half hour before sunrise, Fred Helfrich, who also serves as the club’s advocacy chair, shared from his own experiences with cycling that passing motorists tend to give more room when they see his lights illuminated even in daytime.
The members expressed understanding that some who bike in the community may not have the extra funds for lighting or simply are unaware of the law. Overall, their hope is that this donation will promote safety for bicyclists within the community. WPD is thankful for KCV Cycling Club’s generosity and is looking forward to the opportunity to educate and assist bicyclists during the evening hours.
WPD was provided enough lights to pass out a handful to all patrol officers; the department was also instructed not to hesitate if there is a need for additional lights in the future. Officer Paige Wood was on station and graciously accepted the lights on behalf of the department.
Barry McManus, who owns Trailhouse Village Bicycles, provided these lights at his cost. Anyone who wishes to have a set should contact WPD.
