WARSAW — Jan. 1 marks the beginning of both a new month and a new year.
January was named for the Roman god Janus, the protector of gates and doorways, who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus is depicted with two faces: one looking into the past; the other with the ability to see into the future.
The January birthstone is garnet. The official flowers of January are the Carnation and the Snowdrop.
Zodiac signs are Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) and Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18).
