GOSHEN – Goshen held off Wawasee just enough to bank a 28-25 Northern Lakes Conference win Friday night at Foreman Field.
Trailing 21-7 in the second quarter, Wawasee added a 24-yard Caleb Clevenger field just before the half, then after nearly a scoreless third quarter, Lucas Ringler picked off a Quinn Bechtel pass and returned it for a score.
Bechtel, however, would help Goshen regain command with a nine-yard touchdown to give Goshen the edge it needed at 28-17 with just over nine minutes left in the contest.
Ringler would find the endzone again, breaking off a 48-yard touchdown run on Wawasee’s next possession, but that would be the final scoring in the contest.
Ringler, who also had a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, led the Warriors (1-8, 1-6 NLC) with 115 rushing yards on 12 carries. Brandon Kelly added 79 yards on the ground and Aidan Monds had a pair of catches for 36 yards.
Bechtel paced the RedHawks (4-5, 2-5 NLC) with 77 yards rushing and another 125 through the air. Jake Turner and Brayden Hinkel each had a touchdown catch.
Wawasee will host DeKalb next week to begin sectional play.
