Grace Soccer Results: Oct. 9
Grace Women 6, Huntington 0
Grace’s women’s soccer team enjoyed a 6-0 rout on Senior Night against Huntington.
Five different Lady Lancers found the back of the net on Saturday, including two goals from JJ Aalbue.
Grace got the scoring started early. The Lady Lancers scored on their first shot of the match.
Alexis Larimore made a dangerous run on the right side of the field and laid a pass in the penalty box to Sam Vondersaar, who scored from a central position in the sixth minute.
Vondersaar had two more shots in the penalty box over the ensuing minutes, and Danae Moriarty also tried a pair of long-range efforts.
The Lady Lancers controlled the pace of the play in the first half, owning the vast majority of possession. As the half progressed, Grace’s chances continued to grow.
In the 20th minute, a well-worked play from the midfield resulted in Grace’s second goal. Lea Moessinger and Vondersaar combined for a few clever passes, ultimately finding Larimore for a clean finish.
A major highlight of the match came in the 33rd minute. Aalbue made her season debut after fully recovering from injury. With her first shot of the season, Aalbue laced a 28-yard blast past the goalkeeper and underneath the crossbar for a memorable debut goal.
Grace’s fourth goal came with the final kick of the half, marking a perfect bookend to a dominant half. Adelee Gartner fired a hard blast that forced a save, and Ashley VandenBoom poked in the rebound in the 44th minute.
Grace entered halftime ahead 4-0. The Lady Lancers outshot the Foresters 15-0.
Aalbue found a second goal shortly into the second half. She finished off a rebound forced by a hard shot from Madison Tuma.
The sixth and final goal occurred with 16 minutes remaining. Vondersaar beat a defender on the right edge of the field and passed the ball into a dangerous position in the box. Sarah Casteel crashed into the box and slammed her shot into the net for the final 6-0 margin.
Grace finished the match with a 25-2 advantage in shot attempts. The Lady Lancers had 14 shots on goal as well as six corners.
Libby Stratton made one save to record the shutout as Grace’s goalkeeper.
The Lady Lancers remain at home on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against Goshen.
Grace Men 2, Huntington 1
Grace’s men’s soccer team knocked off the Huntington Foresters 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers’ game-winning goal came late in the contest when Ze Maria Goncalves connected with Felipe Gruber. Gruber made a clever cut through the Huntington defense and scored from the top of the box.
The Lancers (5-8, 2-2 Crossroads League) controlled pace early and were awarded a free kick after a strong Foresters’ tackle just outside the box.
Ethan Vigario ran the set-play for the Lancers, and his attempt was fought off by Forester wall.
Grace continued to control the game, outshooting Huntington 9-4 by the end of the first half. But the Foresters would be the first to strike.
Huntington (7-5-1, 2-1-1 CL) made a run on goal and snuck a shot just by Matteo Conci inside the post to grab the lead.
Grace did not trail long. Daniel Santos Rosa crossed a ball in front of the goal. Goncalves made a leaping effort and headed the ball into the net to draw the game even entering the second half.
The teams played to a deadlock through most of the second half until Grace finally broke the tie.
Goncalves was involved in his second goal of the day, assisting on Gruber’s goal with seven minutes remaining.
The Lancers would survive a late push to hold onto the 2-1 victory.
Grace outshot Huntington 16-9 for the game and had a 5-0 corner kick advantage.
Conci got the start for Grace in goal and made four saves.
The Lancers will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Goshen for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Maple Leafs.
