Grace Women Compete In Colorado
The Grace women’s golf team gained a new level of experience playing in the 2021 Swan Memorial Tournament, hosted by Colorado Christian University at the Todd Creek Golf Club outside of Denver, Colo. The Lancers finished 12th out of 19 teams in the 54-hole event. The majority of the schools represented compete at the NCAA Division II level.
“We had a terrific trip,” said Coach Denny Duncan. “The Denver area is amazing and the course was extraordinary.”
Grace shot a team score of 335 in the first round Monday led by Summer Stillson, who finished with a 79. The team improved by 11 strokes in Monday’s second round, finishing with a 324. Grace May shot a team-best 79 during the second 18 holes of the day. Carolyn Pacocha posted a 78 during the final round on Tuesday to lead the Lancers to a score of 336.
Over the three rounds, Rebecca Hawes ended with a score of 247, followed by Pacocha at 248 and Sloane Winders at 249.
The Lancers totaled 995 strokes in the three rounds, just five strokes out of a top-10 finish. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs won the event with a final score of 924.
“We didn’t demonstrate the kind of consistency over the 54 holes the we will need in our league,” added Duncan. “Rebecca (Hawes) played well, especially the last two rounds. Carolyn (Pacocho) had a very strong final round. Overall, we see this as a missed opportunity, but there’s a long season ahead.”
Grace Men Take On Rock Hollow
The Lancers took the lead after the first day and then ended up fourth out of 12 teams in their season-opening event. IU-Kokomo hosted the tournament at the Rock Hollow Golf Club.
Senior Noah Wright shot an even par 72 on the first day to come in one shot off the lead. He added a 79 on day two for a final score of 151, finishing fourth overall out of 64 golfers. Blake Lawson and Tristan Dubbs shot identical scores of 80 in each round to tie for 17th with a 160. Chase Byron finished at 162 and Payton Kelly at 166 to round out the top five.
Grace will return to action on September 20-21 at the Lawrence Tech Invitational at the Tree Tops Golf Club in Gaylord, Mich.
