SYRACUSE – Wawasee volleyball head coach Jeff Phillips is hoping a grand start of the 2021 season is the tip of the iceberg.
Phillips is organizing an Alumni Day in conjunction with its season opener against Bremen on August 14, along with a celebration of the 1995 sectional championship team.
The JV match starts at 10 a.m. with the varsity to follow. In addition to the games, the team will provide food and other plans as well as honoring members of the 1995 team that won a sectional title, Wawasee’s last sectional championship club. The Lady Warriors were a mere three points away from a sectional crown last season before falling to NorthWood in an epic five setter at the Tippecanoe Valley Sectional championship match.
“We are really excited to have Alumni Day this year,” stated Phillips. “We had it scheduled for last season to honor the 1995 sectional championship team on the 25th anniversary in the hopes that we would be motivated to end that drought. We came really close to doing just that and it is definitely a goal for this season.
“We also want to honor all of the former Wawasee volleyball players and coaches who were dedicated to the program,” continued Phillips. “With everything that teams have gone through lately something positive like this to launch our 2021 season seemed like the best thing to do.”
