GOP’s Latest Boogeyman
Dear Editor,
It astonishes me that our county leaders believe that critical race theory is the most important issue currently facing Kosciusko County. I have my own opinion on CRT, believing it is a necessary step towards including the forgotten, neglected history and reality of people of color in America. Yet, this move by the Indiana Attorney General and the county commissioners is another attempt to keep the flames of the culture war alive.
It started with the masks, then BLM/Antifa, then vaccines, and now this. They continue to rely on scapegoats to strike fear and anxiety into their conservative base, which has done nothing but create a problem that was not there to begin with. CRT is not currently being taught in Indiana schools, even though several lawmakers and pundits claim the contrary; of course, without evidence. CRT is just another boogeyman that Republican politicians and pundits are using to provoke anger from their reactionary followers.
Our lakes and wetlands are in need of protection, our infrastructure needs to be modernized, young people continue to leave, the metaphoric wounds the pandemic left on the local economy are still fresh, yet our local officials believe that banning critical race theory from our schools and establishing Kosciusko as a “sanctuary county for constitutional rights” were the most urgent issues they had to tackle. What a shame that our county officials are desperate to cling onto power that they bring hot button topics to the local level rather than fix the problems that are truly affecting our county.
