BOURBON — Westbound traffic on US 30 near SR 331 will likely remain closed through the holiday weekend, according to a spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The emergency closure happened Tuesday afternoon after a sinkhole developed in the westbound lane between SR 331 and Beech Road, which is north of Bourbon.
The sinkhole is the result of a broken underground culvert that collapsed, most likely because of heavy rains in recent days, said Cassandra Bajek, public relations director for INDOT’s northwest district.
“At this point, it’s undetermined how long it’s going to be before we can open it back up,” she said. “More than likely, with it already being Wednesday, it probably won’t be open before the weekend.”
Repairs will involve cutting into the westbound lanes to replace the pipe, she said.
“With that pipe not being structurally sound, we don’t want people driving over it – mostly over caution,” Bajek said.
The official detour will follow State Road 19 (Etna Green), State Road 10 and SR 331. The eastbound lanes will remain open.
