WARSAW — Warsaw Community High School Senior Brennan Cox is the recipient of the 2021 Phillip D. Hochstetler Memorial Scholarship.
Cox is a member of the Pierceton Cadet Program hosted by the Pierceton Police Department. The program, which began in 2019, is the only police cadet program offered in Kosciusko County.
The memorial scholarship was presented to Cox by Andrew Hochstetler, the son of Phillip D. Hochstetler who was killed in the line of duty in 1994.
Andrew Hochstetler joined the department about a year ago.
The scholarship was established in 2005 and is available to local students who are pursuing a criminal justice degree.
Recipients are chosen by a scholarship committee consisting of Chris Francis, the sheriff’s office public information officer and representatives from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation.
“Receiving this scholarship means so much to me. I am extremely honored, blessed and thankful for this opportunity,” Cox said. “My desires to attend college could not come to fruition without the individuals that are a part of the Phillip D. Hochstetler Scholarship Fund. Although I was born eight years after the tragic death of Detective Sergeant Phillip D. Hochstetler, it is apparent that he has made a lasting impact in our community. I hope that I am able to honor his memory and family with this opportunity. There are no words to describe how great of an honor this is. I give everything that I am and have to God.”
The scholarship was presented at the WCHS award ceremony on Tuesday, May 18.
