Hostrawser, Hepler HNAC Champs
The one dubs tandem of Lexia Hostrawser and Emma Hepler claimed a court title for Triton at the Hoosier North Athletic Conference Girls Tennis Championships Thursday evening in Knox.
The Trojan seniors ran to a 6-3, 6-3 win over North Judson’s Sophia Frasure and Amanda Trokie in the championship match.
It would stand as both the only title for Triton, and the only loss for North Judson, the Blue Jays winning the other four championship matchups to claim the team title in the process.
Lilliann Frasure beat Triton’s Molly McFarland in one of those finals, Frasure claiming the No. 1 singles title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Olivia Burkett and Abby Chambers took down Triton’s Cheyenne Hawley and Danica Kuntz 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Triton’s Madeline Ritchison took third at No. 2 singles, beating Knox’s Mallory McIntire 6-2, 6-1, and Knox’s Megan Timm shut out Olivia Shively in the No. 3 singles consolation final.
Grace Men 4, Dallas Baptist 0
Only one match now stands between Grace men’s tennis team and its first national championship.
The Lancers (24-5) beat Dallas Baptist 4-0 on Thursday in the NCCAA national semifinal. Grace will aim for its place in history on Friday morning when the Lancers play Judson at 11 a.m. (Eastern) in the NCCAA national championship match.
Grace, led by head coach Andy Lewis, is playing in its first NCCAA tournament in program history.
Grace and Judson will face off for the third time this season on Friday morning. The Lancers have won both of the previous meetings, including a narrow 4-3 win during NCCAA pool play on Tuesday.
The Lancers had little trouble dispatching NCAA Div. II Dallas Baptist in the semifinals. Facundo Paredes and Ivan Antinori dominated their opponents 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Max Rozas and Mauricio Corty battled to a 7-6 win at No. 2 to grab the doubles’ point for Grace.
The Patriots (11-11) did not have a chance to make up the deficit during singles’ play.
Antinori earned his second win of the day, securing a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6. David Sandi was also victorious at No. 3 (6-0, 6-3), and Fabricio Galvan earned the win at No. 4 (6-0, 6-4).
The Lancers are in the midst of a two-week stint in Mobile, Ala. Grace will remain on site for next week’s NAIA National Championships, competing for the first time as a full team since 1988.
Tippecanoe Valley 4, Wabash 1
Valley doubles and its top two were winners Thursday in a Three Rivers Conference dual against visiting Wabash.
Kaitlin Neese and Mackenzie Costello continued to roll, winning four and two, while Andie Schwenger and Jada Hicks were equal to the task in a two and love win.
At No. 1, Hannah Parson won 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, and at No. 2, Hannah Engstrand took care of business four and two. Peyton Oldham fell at No. 3, losing 7-5, 6-7 (7-2), 7-10.
NLC Day 2
Dreams of conference championships were put into focus for 14 Northern Lakes Conference girls tennis players on Thursday at Concord as part of Day 2 of the NLC Girls Tennis Championships.
NorthWood has its one doubles team of Amy Adams and Emery Porter alive for a title shot, the Panther duo winning 6-4. 6-3 over Warsaw’s Marie Frazzetta and Peri Britton. The Panthers will meet Northridge for the title. Warsaw will get Plymouth in the third-place game, and Wawasee’s Tate Cowan and Abby Morehead will play for fifth.
NorthWood’s other three semi-finalists were knocked out of the championship round. At No. 1 singles, Northridge’s Riley Wheatley beat Gabriella Umbower 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 2, Plymouth’s Aubrey Vervynckt beat Britton Jesse 6-1, 6-2. Wheatly will meet Plymouth’s Miranda German and Vervynckt will see Concord’s Lilah Dean in the finals. At two dubs, Paige Henschen and Kate Stillson fell 6-1, 6-1 to Northridge’s Taylin Cress and Morgan Mack, the Raiders set to see Concord in the finals.
Ridge sent another to the finals in Maia Schmucker at No. 3 singles, beating Warsaw’s Megan Mishler 6-2, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Plymouth’s Bella Kain.
Up for fifth-place finishes include Wawasee’s Kiah Farrington, Warsaw’s Regan Brouwer, NorthWood’s Ashlyn Feller and Wawasee’s No. 2 doubles team of Kenley Stewart and Allison Clark.
