Warsaw Native Visits Salvation Army
News Release
WARSAW — Retired Majors Murry and Julie Herron shared during the morning worship held at The Salvation Army on Sunday, April 18.
The couple was honored as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of The Salvation Army in Warsaw.
Murry Herron was recognized for his service to the nation along with the couple’s service in The Salvation Army by Envoy Ken and Sina Locke. Major Murry Herron discussed the need for Christ to be the foundation “rock” of people’s lives during the service.
Murry Herron, son of Murry and Odell Herron, grew up in Warsaw attending The Salvation Army.
He graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 1966 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, eventually serving in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged and then returned home to attend Grace College. Herron then enrolled as a cadet with The Salvation Army School For Officer Training in Chicago. He met his wife Julie in training, and they were both commissioned as officers in 1974.
Commissioner Richard Holz, then territorial commander, who had served as a chaplain in World War II in the Pacific Theatre, contacted Murry Herron to see if he would consider being a chaplain in the U.S. Army. He completed the necessary education and entered the Chaplain Corps in the early 1980s, serving until his retirement as a major in 2000. During that time, he served at various appointments including at Fort Ord and during Desert Storm.
