Diamond Notes: April 13
Warsaw Softball Helping #prayforpayton
The Warsaw softball program is getting involving in helping one of Warsaw’s own.
Warsaw’s home softball contest on Wednesday, April 14, against Fort Wayne will have a local spin as the team is looking to raise funds in the continued battle for Payton Slaymaker. The #prayforpayton tag has been in play for a couple years as Claypool’s Slaymaker has continued her battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a type of cancer that begins in the brain stem.
The softball program is getting involved, bringing out Payton’s sister, Avery Slaymaker, to throw out the first pitch. The team is also selling T-shirts, taking general donations, and WCHS athletic director Matt Binkerd noted half the gate receipts from the game with Fort Wayne Carroll will be donated to the Slaymaker family.
The Warsaw community has been very responsive to supporting the Slaymaker family, which has since become a national movement, including a phone call from Peyton Manning and several other charitable organizations becoming involved.
