HAMLET – A storybook ending, for sure.
Triton rose above Argos in overtime to win the Class 1-A Oregon-Davis Girls Basketball Sectional, 34-28, Saturday night.
The game was about as even as it could get, with six ties and five lead changes. After falling behind by four points, 10-6, after a quarter, Triton chipped away to tie the game at 20 entering the fourth before both teams went into lockdown mode in the fourth, settling on 24-24 to go to overtime.
It wasn’t the prettiest route to a title, as both teams combined for 36 turnovers, and Argos had a horrid shooting night, going 9-41 for the game (22 percent), making just four field goals after the half. Triton wasn’t much better, but was better when it needed to be, shooting 35 percent for the night, but hit three of its five shots in overtime.
Kinsey Atkins led Triton with 13 points and Taren Yates offered her compliment of work, recording six points, seven rebounds, six steals and two assists. Lexia Hostrawser added six rebounds as the Trojans claimed its seventh sectional title, the first since 2011.
Argos (9-11) almost had two players with double-doubles, Elizabeth Edmonds had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Madi VanDerWeele had nine points and 13 rebounds.
Triton (11-11) won its fifth straight game in a row, and will look to make it six straight next Saturday at the Caston Regional, where it will take on Fort Wayne Blackhawk (19-6) in the semi-finals. In a rematch of the volleyball regional, Pioneer (21-4) and Kouts (17-6) will renew acquaintances also at Caston.
