PIERCETON — A local Girl Scout troop has learned about how to care for pets by visiting the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County.
Five Scouts along with one sibling spent some time with the cats and dogs at the league, 1048 S. CR 325E, Pierceton, on Saturday, Jan. 30, to help earn a pet badge. The Scouts are all third- and fourth-graders and part of Troop 51211 that is based out of Harrison Elementary School in Warsaw.
They are either Brownie or Junior Girl Scouts.
The girls first heard about pet care from AWL of Kosciusko Shelter Consultant Tonya Blanchard. They then helped clean out litter boxes, walked some dogs and got to play with the animals.
The girls also brought a donation of pet toys and distributed pet beds they made to the cats. The girls used money from their cookie sales from last year to buy supplies for the beds.
Troop Leader Shelby Dean, who is a Harrison Elementary fourth grade teacher, said she hoped the girls discovered “how to help others and show care for animals.”
Scout Samary Nunez said spending time with the cats was her favorite part of the day. She doesn’t have any cats personally but does have a dog, Nala.
Carlee Skaggs said she liked visiting with the kitten, Dani, and the dog, Dozer. She has one cat and two dogs herself.
