Warriors Take One At Team State

FORT WAYNE – Wawasee continues to compete at a high level among the state’s wrestling elite, and did so again Saturday at the IHSWCA Team State at the Memorial Coliseum.
Wawasee competed in three dual matches as a Class 2-A competitor.
In round one, Jay County won nine of the 14 mat duals to score a 41-27 victory. Four Warriors won by pin fall, those coming from Haegan Slusher, Jace Alexander, Gavin Malone and Tim Shortt. Hunter Miller picked up a decision.
Wawasee took a bye in round two, and moved on to face Monrovia. The Warriors got falls from Slusher, Miller, Brenden Dilley and Chance Flannery, tech falls from Alexander and Shortt, a major decision from Cameron Zimmerman and a forfeit in favor of Dylan Tom in its victory.
In the class’ ninth place match, New Prairie’s John Klosinski scored a 6-5 decision over Eleazar Vazquez to lift the Cougars to a 38-35 win. Tom, Alexander and Malone all had falls for Wawasee, Shortt had another tech fall win, Miller had a forfeit and both Dilley and Kam Salazar earned decision wins.
Other area teams competing included Manchester, which went 3-1 and took fifth in Class 1-A; Jimtown went 2-2 and placed seventh in Class 2-A; Northridge went 2-1 and placed fifth in Class 3-A; and Mishawaka went 1-2 and placed fourth in Class 3-A.
