Syracuse Man Arrested For Allegedly Battering Pregnant Woman
Staff Report

Martin Lewis Hagerman
SYRACUSE — A Syracuse man was recently arrested after battering and choking a pregnant woman.
Martin Lewis Hagerman, 26, 11523 N. Elm Grove Road, Syracuse, is charged with domestic battery to a pregnant woman, domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury and criminal confinement, all level 5 felonies; and strangulation and intimidation, both level 6 felonies.
On Oct. 24, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s officer went to Goshen General Hospital regarding a domestic battery report. The officer spoke with a woman who said she was battered by Hagerman.
According to court documents, the woman said she and Hagerman went out for the evening and Hagerman became intoxicated. When the woman took him home, Hagerman yelled for her to bring him a trash bag to throw up in. Hagerman then threw up everywhere except in the trash bag.
The woman said she helped Hagerman get in the shower; after doing that, she noticed a picture that had vomit on it. As she attempted to clean off the picture, Hagerman left the shower and accused the woman of trying to throw the picture away.
Due to Hagerman’s intoxicated state of mind, the woman decided to leave the residence. As she attempted to leave, Hagerman slammed the woman against the residence’s front door and took her keys and phone. Hagerman allegedly slapped the woman with an open hand. When the woman placed her hands on her face in self-defense, Hagerman began choking the woman with both of his hands, court paperwork said.
Hagerman told the woman he would kill her if she left and hit her again. He then told the woman to leave and went into the bathroom, slamming the door shut. The woman found her keys and phone and attempted to leave when Hagerman ran out, stood near the front door and hit her again. Hagerman shoved the woman against the kitchen wall and choked her until she passed out.
The woman had visible swelling to the left side of her face, a swollen lip, a cut inside her mouth, marks on her neck and minor bruising on her arms and legs. The woman also said she told Hagerman she was pregnant nearly two months ago.
Hagerman was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on Dec. 12, with an $11,000 surety and cash bond.
