SYRACUSE — The Wawasee Flotilla will be running its 59th parade Saturday, July 4, which is a perfect time to celebrate independence, freedom and national pride. This year’s theme is “Proud to be an American.”
The flotilla is not just for decorated boats. The event is also for those who want to use their creativeness to decorate their piers or homes.
The decorated boat entries are asked to gather in front of the Wawasee Spink at noon. The parade will begin at 12:30 p.m., moving counterclockwise around the lake.
What do you think makes our United States of America unique, strong or special? Our constitutional rights? Traditions? Landmarks? Share your thoughts by decorating boats, piers and homes.
To be eligible to win an award, participants on land or water need to register. Registration forms will be available at retailers in Syracuse and at Team Tuttle Mortgage, SR 13, Syracuse, or call (574) 457-3775 or email [email protected] to have a registration form sent. Participants may also register the day of the flotilla at the judge’s boat.
This year’s special awards will be the coveted Commodore Cup, Department of Natural Resources, Wawasee Property Owners Association, On-shore, Red White & Boom, It’s All Good, The Greatest Generation and The Rogers Award. Float categories awards will be classic, wooden, antique boats, Best Lake Wawasee History, business/commercial, most original, post patriotic, neighborhood, non-profit and youth. There will be on-shore awards for yard/pier display. A People’s Choice Award, determined by Facebook voters, will also be presented.
The Commodore’s Cup will be awarded immediately after the parade in front of the Spink. All other awards will be published on the Wawasee Flotilla Facebook Page and presented at the Channel Marker between 11 a.m.-noon, Sunday, July 5.
