Suspect In Police Chase Had Been Sought In South Dakota
WARSAW — A man captured in Warsaw early Saturday morning after a police chase that originated in Elkhart County was apparently wanted by authorities in Aberdeen, S.D.
An Aberdeen Police Department Facebook post on Saturday announced, “Ronald Elkins, who was being sought yesterday by APD in reference to a Brown County warrant and suspicion of vehicular theft and violation of protection order, was apprehended in Indiana.”
According to the Elkhart County jail website, Ronald Elkins, is listed as an inmate at the Elkhart County Correctional Complex on charges of resisting law enforcement / resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of a handgun without a license, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle used in the commission of a crime and theft of a firearm.
The police pursuit originated in Elkhart County late Friday night and continued into Kosciusko County on State Road 15 just after midnight. A rolling roadblock was used near US 30 and SR 15 to halt the fleeing vehicle, a 1999 gold Ford F150. A firearm was found inside the vehicle.
Det./Sgt. Brad Keller, public information officer for the Warsaw Police Department, said Saturday that a suspect apprehended in the pursuit was taken into custody by Elkhart County authorities after the chase.
Police in South Dakota had believed Elkins was in Aberdeen Friday morning, which led to a lockdown of a hospital.
An article posted Friday morning on KELOLAND News, of Aberdeen, reported that a hospital had been on a controlled lockdown while Aberdeen authorities searched for Elkins, who was believed to be driving a 1999 gold Ford F150 SD stolen from Brookings, S.D.
After further investigation, it was determined that Elkins was most likely not in the area. A cell phone linked to Elkins pinged in the vicinity of the hospital; however, it was later determined that the phone was in the possession of another person.
According to a Dakota News Now article dated Feb. 22, 2019, Elkins was arrested and charged at that time with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, aggravated eluding and reckless driving after police surrounded a home in Aberdeen with guns drawn. Authorities took Elkins into custody after he tried to escape out a back window.
