Alleged Car Thief Leads Police On High Speed Chase
ANGOLA — Indiana State Troopers from the Fort Wayne Post arrested an alleged car thief who led them on a high-speed chase through Noble and Whitley Counties, Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 25.
Nathan Lundgren, 27, Angola, was apprehended after the pursuit and incarcerated in the Noble County Jail, where he faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, said a news release from the ISP.
He was charged with possession of the stolen property, a level 6 felony; resisting law enforcement, a level 6 felony; aggressive driving, a class A misdemeanor; operating while suspended, a class A misdemeanor; and reckless driving, a class C misdemeanor.
The incident began at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. Trooper Richard Williams spotted a stolen Pontiac Trans Am on SR 9 south of Albion in Noble County. This vehicle had been reported stolen from the Angola area earlier that morning. Trooper Williams attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, Lundgren, sped off and initiated a high-speed pursuit.
Trooper Williams reported vehicle speeds on the rural stretch of SR 9 up to 115 mph. Recognizing the risks associated with a vehicle entering the populated area of Columbia City at those speeds, Williams quickly coordinated a plan with Master Trooper Joe McLaughlin to de-escalate the chase. Once the pursuit entered into northern Whitley County, McLaughlin, positioned ahead of the chase and used a tire deflation device to demobilize the car.
The Trans Am ran off the road and came to rest in a ditch of SR 9 south of CR500N. Lundgren became physically resistant, but Troopers quickly gained control and took him into custody.
He remains in custody pending an initial court hearing, said the news release.
