Wabash Man Faces Charges In Accidental Shooting
WARSAW — A Wabash man faces criminal recklessness and a drug-related charge after allegedly shooting himself in the hand.
Skylar Jacob Winget, 24, 389 Alena St., Wabash, faces charges of criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon, a level 6 felony; and possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor.
On Jan. 23, police responded to an undisclosed residence for a report of an injury. Police spoke with Winget. He said he accidentally shot himself in the hand with a firearm, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Police investigated the wound and determined that an object may have entered through the middle palm Winget’s left hand, exited near the heel of his left palm and wrist. Winget said he was cleaning a Smith and Wesson M&P, one of his four firearms while watching a movie. He said he shot himself while disassembling the weapon, said the affidavit.
The owner of the residence did not consent to a search of the scene. A warrant was obtained to secure the scene of the shooting, the affidavit said. Four firearms were located near the couch were Winget intended to clean his weapon. The Smith and Wesson M&P was located among the four firearms. The owner said he was sitting on another couch to the Winget’s left. Winget’s gun happened to be pointed in his direction when the incident occurred, said the affidavit.
Near the couch, police also allegedly found three plastic baggies in a pair of blue jeans. One of the baggies contained a greenish-brown plant later identified to be marijuana, said the affidavit.
Winget has a prior conviction for possession of marijuana, said the affidavit.
On Feb. 5, Winget was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail with a bond of $5,250 surety and cash.
