NORTHWOOD GIRLS 66, MICHIGAN CITY 48
NorthWood capped its regular season with an undefeated mark at The Pit in beating the Wolves Wednesday night.
The Black Swish (21-3) finished the home slate 10-0 with the win, the first undefeated home schedule since the 2011-12 season. The Panthers also furthered its record for most regular season wins in a season, which it met last Saturday at 20 in the Goshen win and added to Wednesday.
The Panthers did so in much of the same manner it has all season. Kate Rulli led the way for NorthWood with 27 points in her home finale, and Maddy Payne gave her final hurrah with 19 points. Rulli and Payne combined for 21 points in the first quarter, spearheading a 27-point outburst in the opening frame.
Karlie Fielstra and Reagan Hartman combined for five points in their final game at The Pit.
Trinity Thompson led the Wolves with 19 points and Katelin Halfacre added 17 points.
NorthWood won its final JV game, 23-16, over City.
NorthWood will take on Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday in the second game of the Lakeland Sectional.
TRITON 7TH GRADE GIRLS 23, OREGON-DAVIS 18
Maddison Miller paced the Trojans with 13 points in the win. Allie Westafer added six points. Sarah Thompson had nine points for the junior Dragons.
TRITON 8TH GRADE GIRLS 36, OREGON-DAVIS 9
Addyson Viers had a big night for Triton with 20 points and Jocelynn Faulkner tossed in 14 points. Reagan Danford led O-D with five points.
GRACE WOMEN 73, GOSHEN 71
Grace’s women’s basketball team picked up a road win against Goshen on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers held off a fourth quarter rally from the Maple Leafs to clinch the victory by a score of 73-71.
Kyannah Stull starred for Grace. She made a career-high seven 3-pointers, adding the go-ahead free throws for a 26-point performance.
The Lady Lancers (15-8, 6-5 Crossroads League) got off to a slow start, scoring just six points in the first five minutes.
Micaela Box scored to spark the offense, and Grace scored on four straight possessions; Vironnica Drake drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10-10.
Grace went on a 12-3 run as Stull, Box and Maddie Ryman each connected from deep to build a 22-13 lead after one quarter of play.
The Maple Leafs (8-15, 1-10 CL) put together a run of their own to pull within three points early in the second quarter.
However, a pivotal stretch from the Lady Lancers shut down the rally. Lexi Minix buried a 3-pointer and drew an offensive foul.
Ryman capitalized on the turnover by draining a triple to give Grace a 12-point cushion. The Lady Lancers went into halftime with a comfortable 43-32 lead.
Stull led all scorers at the half with 12 points, and Drake had 11 points. Ryman was a perfect 3-of-3 from the 3-point line for nine points.
The Lady Lancers shot 52 percent from the 3-point line and 47 percent from the field in the first half.
Goshen’s offense began to heat up as the third quarter began. Goshen cut the lead to six with four minutes left in the quarter. But Stull responded by burying a triple.
The Maple Leafs would go on another run, but again Stull responded with a 3-point basket.
Goshen’s offensive outburst cut the lead to five points, with Grace ahead 57-52 heading into the final stanza.
A steal from Minix produced a transition three from Drake, putting the Lady Lancers up by nine.
The Maple Leafs kept trimming the deficit, eventually pulling within one point with 1:20 remaining.
After an empty possession from the Lady Lancers, Goshen took the lead 71-70.
With less than 30 seconds left, Stull made a strong play and drew a foul. She knocked down both free throws to take the lead 72-71.
The Lady Lancers’ defense showed intensity on the final possession, forcing Goshen to throw the ball out of bounds on their final drive.
Stull hit a free throw with two seconds left to secure the 73-71 victory.
Drake scored 22 points with four assists and three rebounds. Stull nearly had a double-double, grabbing nine boards and scoring 26 points.
Ryman was 4-of-6 from the 3-point line, finishing with 12 points and three assists. Kamryn Hostetler added five assists.
The Lady Lancers shot 39 percent from the floor and 48 percent from the 3-point line. The defense forced 16 turnovers.
Grace will remain on the road to face No. 21 Huntington this Saturday at 1 p.m.
GRACE MEN 98, GOSHEN 86
Grace’s men’s basketball team enjoyed a wire-to-wire win on Wednesday in a 98-86 rout of Goshen.
The No. 18 Lancers continued their impressive Crossroads League campaign; Grace sits in a tie for third place after finishing the season sweep of Goshen.
Five players for Grace scored in double figures, led by 24 points from Charlie Warner and 20 from Haden Deaton.
Grace scored the first points on Wednesday off a basket by Braxton Linville, and the Lancers maintained that lead for the rest of the evening.
Grace was a bit careless with the ball at the start, committing five turnovers in the first eight minutes.
But despite those miscues, the Lancers (15-8, 7-4 CL) still held a comfortable edge throughout the half.
The Maple Leafs (4-19, 0-11 CL) were largely muted offensively in the first half. Grace held Goshen to 34 points in the half, owning a 43-34 lead at halftime.
Grace made 68 percent as a team from the floor. The Lancers had 11 turnovers but also boasted a 17-9 edge in rebounding.
Warner led all players with 11 points at the break, and Deaton made all three of his field goals for eight points.
Warner’s production carried over into the second half. The senior forward scored seven points in a two-minute flurry, helping Grace to a 14-point cushion.
Goshen tried to recover, slicing the margin down to eight, but the Lancers were up for the challenge.
The Lancers used balanced production to pull ahead. Matt Jennings caused havoc in the second half, using sharp defensive instincts and speed on the fastbreak to keep Grace’s offense humming.
Myles Johnson was a force in the paint, and Warner and Deaton were consistent threats from deep and on the drive. Jaret Sons put an exclamation point on the half with a driving tomahawk dunk along the baseline.
The Lancers had little trouble holding on; Goshen was unable to generate a comeback bid over the final 10 minutes, and Grace coasted to the comfortable win.
Warner shot an efficient 10-of-14 from the floor for his 24 points, adding six boards and three assists, and Deaton made 6-of-9 in his 20-point night.
Johnson stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 2 assists, and Sons notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Jennings racked up 13 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds, and Linville added seven points and six assists.
Grace shot 62 percent from the floor while Goshen made 49 percent. The Lancers also got to the free throw line 32 times, hitting 78 percent from the charity stripe.
The Lancers remain on the road Saturday, facing Huntington at 3 p.m.
