Slone, Duerksen Reach Bowling Semi-State
SOUTH BEND – A pair of local bowlers will take their shot this weekend in the next round of the Indiana High School Bowling state tournament.
Warsaw’s Brooklyn Slone and NorthWood’s Skyler Duerksen both rolled their way to semi-state appearances set for this weekend at Chippewa Bowl in South Bend. Both bowlers qualified from different sectionals and regionals.
Slone rolled series’ of 511 at the Wabacanoe Sectional and 479 at the Crawfordsville Regional. At the sectional, Slone finished second, losing to Rochester’s Baylie Navarro, 178-161, in the stepladder championship. Slone reached the final after beating Lily Sivini of Logansport in the semi-finals. Slone did not reach the stepladder level of the regional, placing sixth overall.
Warsaw’s Hunter Jackson rolled a 512 on the boys side of the Wabacanoe Sectional and qualified for the regional, but did not come up with enough to advance to South Bend’s semi-state.
Duerksen was the overall sectional champion at the Michiana Central Sectional, rolling a 566 series. In the stepladder tournament, Duerksen knocked off Jimtown’s Hunter Hoffman in the final, 234-179. Teammate Tanner Bunch also made the ladder, but fell to Hoffman, 220-131. Bunch would bow out at the Fort Wayne Regional, but Duerksen continued on after reaching the finals. Winning by five and eight points against Goshen’s Aaron Hoffman and DeKalb’s Skyler Plummer, Duerksen made the finals before falling to Huntington North’s Tylar Haney, 277-156.
