Sacred Heart School Reflects On Recent STREAM Family Night
WARSAW — Exciting things are happening at Sacred Heart School in Warsaw.
The school’s STREAM program is an integral part of the school’s curriculum, adding Arts to STEM educational experiences with a Religious component at the core of education. What was new on Jan. 15 was the inception of their STREAM family night with a partnership with Purdue STEM.
The format consisted of activity tables located throughout the gym for the students. Each station offered hands-on activities. Students were engaged throughout the evening as Purdue STEM representatives in conjunction with Sacred Heart teachers and staff helped at each activity table. Parents were also active at the stations by lending a helping hand to facilitate the activities, said a news release from Sacred Heart Elementary School.
“The response from our SHS families for the night was tremendous!” said Principal Mike McClain.“What was particularly wonderful was that the partnership between the students, the educators, and the parents was on full display.”
“The teachers & staff were leading the students through the activities & the parents were right alongside their students helping them understand the concepts. Everyone was working side-by-side helping kids learn,” he said, “It was truly heartwarming!”
Students were excited as they moved from station to station.
Sisters Vivian and Evelyn Piecuch said they “liked the station with batteries and electricity. It was fun how you could place water on metal and learn about chemical reactions.”
Parent Nick Drury said of the STREAM Family Night, “It captured the essence of what the STREAM curriculum is all about – generating excitement for science and STEM principles while weaving in religious and artistic themes.”
Moreover, STREAM coordinator Andrea Komorowski said about the inaugural event, “It was an evening full of enrichment for our students, teachers, and parents,” she said. “The involvement of Purdue Extension added another dimension to the evening by showing that STEM concepts are at work in agriculture as well.
“Having the freedom to incorporate religion and art into our STREAM program along with the science and technology gives our kids a broader perspective,” said Komorowski.
The school will carry this momentum forward as they go into Catholic Schools Week starting the week of Jan. 26. The public is invited to an open house at the school on Sunday, Jan. 26 from noon until 1 p.m. Attendees will be able to learn about Sacred Heart’s STREAM curriculum along with their other new & exciting programming and extra-curricular activities, said the news release.
