SOUTH WHITLEY — Saturday, Nov. 16, three Whitko Lego Robotics teams traveled to Wawasee Middle School to participate in the Northern Indiana Wawasee First LEGO League Qualifying Tournament.
This year the theme was City Shaper, said a news release from Whitko Community Schools.
Teams chose and then solved a real-world problem in the Innovation Project. The objective was to select a city or town and answer the questions: What if you could build a better world? Where would you begin?
They also built, tested, and programmed an autonomous robot using LEGO Mindstorms technology to solve a set of missions in the robot game. Throughout their experience, teams operate under the FIRST signature set of Core Values: celebrating discovery, teamwork, and gracious professionalism.
In the morning, teams began by practicing, testing, and presenting their robot design and team project to a panel of judges. Later that afternoon, the focus transitioned to programming and performing for three rounds on a 4 foot by 8-foot game table. Whitko’s teams would be competing against 11 other teams to see which team can acquire the most points inside of 2 minutes and thirty seconds.
The following are the three teams and their team members:
Bridge Dominators – Lily Osborn and Nickoli Radu.
The Mechanibois – Logan Denton and Keaton Cornell
Sally Savers – Lucas Wagner, Dalton Lung, and Devyn Bradley
Two out of three Whitko Lego Robotic teams walked away with trophies. The Mechanibois team, qualified for State. Team members Denton and Cornell received the Judge’s Award trophy for excellent performance by a two-man team and 1st place trophy for Robot Design Award. Sally Savers received a 2nd place trophy for Innovation Project.
Denton and Cornell’s team, The Mechanibois, was one of the four recipients to advance to State. They will travel to Purdue University Fort Wayne on Dec. 14 to represent Whitko at the 20th anniversary Northern Indiana First Lego League State Championship.
