NAPPANEE — Two young children died Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 19, in a farming accident east of Nappanee.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., emergency responders from multiple agencies were dispatched to the area of 5370 West 1350N regarding two children possibly struck by a truck. The farm is roughly midway between Nappanee and Milford.
Emergency responders found two children, ages three and five, about 300 feet north of CR 1350N and directly east of a home at 5370 West CR 1350 N, according to a statement by the sheriff’s office.
The preliminary findings of the investigation indicate that a 1992 International semi-tractor with an attached grain trailer was being driven by Benjamin Tyler Sheets, 26, of Nappanee.
Sheets began to pull forward after it was loaded with grain. As the tractor-trailer went into motion, the two children, who were presumably underneath the trailer, were struck. The children received fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Kosciusko County Coroner’s office.
The crash remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office Fatal Team.
