Grace Loads Up On Weekly Awards
WINONA LAKE – Grace College had four athletes in four different sports win weekly honors, it was announced late Monday.
MEN’S SOCCER
Marcelo Talamas was recognized at the national level for Grace’s men’s soccer team as the NCCAA National Player of the Week.
Talamas was involved in four goals last week. He netted two important goals in a 4-3 win at Judson, and he had two assists in a win over Lincoln on Saturday.
The junior forward has scored six goals in his past five matches. The Lancers are on the road Saturday with a trip to Cleary.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Following an impressive ranked win, Bethany Blackwood was named the Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week for Grace’s women’s soccer team.
Blackwood registered five saves to secure a 3-1 win over No. 19 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). She has four shutouts this season to help No. 16 Grace to a 6-1 mark.
The Lady Lancers are at home twice this week, including Wednesday 7 p.m. against Indiana Tech and Saturday 7 p.m. against Cleary.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Emily Mast was named the Crossroads League Player of the Week on Monday for Grace’s women’s tennis team.
Mast, who plays No. 1 singles, was perfect on the court for the Lady Lancers in three matches. She only dropped one set in an impressive performance in singles’ play against Spring Arbor, St. Francis and Taylor.
Her closest match at No. 1 doubles (with Dayana Ortega) was a 6-2 victory over Spring Arbor.
Mast has led the Lady Lancers to a perfect 8-0 record, extending the program record for best start. She will lead the Lady Lancers into the biggest match of the season on Tuesday, taking on No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan in Marion, Ind. Grace and IWU are tied atop the league standings with just two Crossroads League matches remaining.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pavle Popovic picked up an individual honor on Monday for Grace’s men’s tennis team when he was named the Crossroads League Player of the Week.
Popovic was a perfect 6-0 last week for the Lancers, playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as well as No. 1/No. 2 doubles. He helped Grace remain undefeated in the Crossroads League with a 7-0 league record.
The Lancers will try to break the deadlock atop the league standings on Tuesday, traveling to play at No. 22 Indiana Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Grace and IWU are both unbeaten in CL play with two matches to go.
