NORTHWOOD GIRLS 2, MISHAWAKA 1
Life was good for NorthWood in its first-ever soccer match on the new pitch at the Nappanee Soccer Complex at Wellfield Park.
Caitlin Knepp started off NorthWood with its first goal in the 21st minute. Emma Martz added some insurance eleven minutes into the second half, and the Panthers dug in from there and hung on against its soon-to-be conference rivals.
Lily Lomeli got the win in net, NorthWood’s first match of the campaign.
The NorthWood JV piled up a 3-0 win over the Cavemen. Grace Guard and Eva Sloat had the goals for the Panthers.
NorthWood (1-0) returns to Wellfield Park Saturday to host Bethany Christian.
BETHANY CHRISTIAN GIRLS 3, LAKELAND CHRISTIAN 0
Bethany Christian rode the skill of Caroline Cartmel to a hat trick in taking down LCA in Winona Lake.
A pair of drives by Cartmel through the LCA defense in the first half ended in goals, putting the Bruins up by a pair at the break. Cartmel finished off her hat trick midway through the second half to bury the Cougars.
“We looked tired and down most of the game,” started LCA head coach Nat Raber. “We have been no strangers to getting scored on early but never really recovered. Was pleased with most of the first half, just wish we could have capitalized on our chances.”
LCA (1-1) next host Whitko Monday afternoon.
WESTVIEW BOYS 4, WAWASEE 2
Two goals in the first 40 seconds of the match had the two teams even, but Westview settled in for a two-goal win at Wawasee.
Chris Pena found paydirt just 19 seconds into the match for Wawasee, but it took Westview just 21 seconds to respond. Pena would take a Jace Mishler assist and get his second goal, but Wawasee couldn’t keep Westview from finding the net three more times.
Evan Dippon would make a penalty save in net to highlight the Wawasee defensive effort.
“Nerves,” started Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. “We couldn’t beat a strong high offside line by Westview. Numerous chances for us. Cracker of a first match.”
Alec Beigler had the match’s only goal, and it was a golden one for Wawasee in a 1-0 JV win over Westview.
Wawasee (0-1) host South Bend Riley Thursday evening.
