Discover Three Hidden Gems This Summer In Kosciusko County

Pictured is Pisgah Marsh in Pierceton.
KOSCIUSKO — Thanks to its beautiful lakes, Kosciusko County is a popular place for summertime fun. Obvious ways to enjoy the water include picnicking on open beaches, water skiing with friends or fishing for bluegill. But there are a few less-traveled ways to enjoy local ecosystems
Beyer Farm Trail – Pike Lake, Warsaw
The Beyer Farm Trail is an 1800-foot boardwalk behind Kosciusko Community Hospital. It rambles through a 60-acre wetland and features informative signs that explain the purpose of a wetland. Visitors can also learn about what lives and grows in a wetland habitat. Check out the new City of Warsaw Stormwater Utility project while you’re there.
This preservation is home to black willows, cattails, arrowhead, swamp roses and more. Quiet observers can even spot beavers, muskrats and wading birds, like sandhill cranes. The trail is an ideal spot for evening walks and bird watching.
Pisgah Marsh – Pierceton
This preserve is a best-kept secret of northeast Indiana. Pisgah Marsh is 445 combined acres of grassland, wetland, upland forest and lake habitats. The boardwalk will take visitors through the wetland and grassland areas, with opportunities to spot local wildlife and enjoy the beauty of native plants.
Durham Lake – Pierceton
Although hunting and fishing are not allowed in the preserve, Durham Lake is just a short drive from Pisgah Marsh. The lake is small-boat accessible, and fishers can catch largemouth bass and bluegill. During hunting season, woodland game, upland game, waterfowl and furbearers are free to catch around the lake. Bagging limits apply. Visit the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ website for details.
