Griner Leads Area Athletes At State
BLOOMINGTON — Wawasee’s Luke Griner finished up his third straight trip to the state track and field finals with a podium finish, and a host of area athletes closed out their seasons at the big meet in Bloomington over the weekend.
Griner clocked 1:52.89 to break his own school record by more than a full second and finish fourth in the 800 meters at the state meet at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex. The Westpoint-bound senior’s time was nearly two seconds better than his seed time and a significant drop from the 1:53.95 school-record time he set back in April. It was also a big improvement over last year’s eighth-place finish at state. Warsaw sophomore Tanner Stiver finished 14th in Friday’s event, meanwhile, with a 1:56.76 stop. Griner’s teammate Isaiah Tipping finished 10th in the shot put with a toss of 56’10.5”, while Stiver’s teammate Nicholas Bazzoni cleared 13’6” for 17th in the pole vault.
NorthWood’s Tyler Evers was 26th in the 1600-meter run with a 4:56.27 time, and fellow Panther Landon Parker placed 15th in the 200-meter dash in 22.23 seconds.
At Saturday’s girls finals, Wawasee’s Jada Parzygnot cleared 11’03” for 13th place in the pole vault, while Warsaw’s Caitlin Keller finished 23rd with a jump of 10-feet. Also in the field for the Lady Tigers, Grayson Kilburn cleared 5 feet in the finals for 28th place. Teammate Wini Barnett clocked 11:51.31 in the two-mile for 27th place there.
Triton’s Abigail Powell earned a 23rd-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a 47.82-second stop of the clock, and NorthWood’s 4×100-meter crew of Reagan Hartman, Emma Martz, Lexi Parisi and Riley Hershberger were 27th in their race in 50.52 seconds.
North Central won the team state championships on both the boys and girls side with a dominant 75 points in the girls meet and 42 points on the boys’ side, just one point ahead of Pike.
